Hotel of the Week: An Unusual Combo of Chic, Elegant, and Family-Friendly

My new favorite hotel of the moment is the Kahala Resort in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. Not far from Waikiki…. but it feels like a different island itself. The Kahala is not only gorgeous, but peaceful since it is away from the hubbub of Honolulu.

The interior of the main lobby is open and airy – and the beach is picturesque…great for swimming as it doesn’t get too deep fast.

The Kahala Resort is in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Hawaii. We stayed in that neighborhood recently and could ride our bikes to the Kahala – the hotel is notorious for its Sunday brunch which attracts locals from nearby.

The kids love the dolphin quest program.. and the rays who live at the hotel. Even though other hotels I’ve seen with dolphin programs seem a little commercial, the Kahala is able to maintain its authenticity, In fact, it is far from being similar to some of the mega ornate hotels that have spouted up in Hawaii.

There are a few great restaurants – the Plumeria is high on my list even if you don’t stay at the hotel. It is what a meal in Hawaii should be – right on the beach… a very relaxed environment -kids were running around on the grass lot right near the tables… and fairly priced for a nice hotel. The Plumeria is not the highest end restaurant at the hotel, and frankly I think it is the prettiest.

Look how cute the menu and centerpieces are.  It has a kids menu too.

The hotel has a great package for families who want joining rooms – and right now is running a last minute spring deal… as well as a “4th night free” special that we’ve been seeing at a lot of other hotels.

Yes, airfare to Hawaii is costly right now – but it is to many other places too….. so if you are thinking about a summer vacation on this weekend to kick off the sunny season, the Kahala won’t disappoint. Aloha and have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. :)

Where the Rich and Famous Go…

http://www.tracygallagher.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/img_0020.jpg

If you can’t go where the A-listers go, at least it is fun to learn about the gorgeous destinations… and even better, watch them on TV!!

This weekend one of my favorite shows I ever hosted is on the Travel Channel Sunday at 12 noon. It is called “Islands for Rent”… and is about – you guessed it, private islands you can rent for you and 10 of your best friends. Or maybe all you need is one.

From Fiji… to the British Virgin Islands…. to Belize…there are some mind-blowingly gorgeous little atolls in the middle of turquoise blue. One featured in the show is Richard Branson’s Necker Island. Pure paradise – I was pinching myself the whole time I was there because at about $200,000 a week, I knew I probably wouldn’t be back. This is where Oprah, Steven Speilberg, Mel Gibson have all reportedly stayed. I remember a funny story – the staff told me they will never say no to any guest’s request… however the one time they did say no was when a nudist colony rented the island, and asked all the staff to bare all also.

One of my personal favorite private islands is Lalati  in Fiji. Affordable too – just a trek to get there.

You can learn about all these indulgent escapes by armchair traveling this Sunday at 12 noon Eastern and Pacific… on the Travel Channel. Set your TIVOS. Just in time for summer.

I think it is time for “Islands for Rent II” !!!

Living High End on the Down Low… Renting a Luxury Home

I admit. I was always a fan of staying in a hotel over renting a house. You moms can relate – no cooking or cleaning – can you say maid service and coffee in the lobby?

BUT I am now a convert. There are many advantages to renting a house for a family vacation.  More people in the high end market are doing so these days and the trend is catching on. You get a high end place.. but are potentially saving money.

For example, I stay at a friend’s home in Hawaii -and have seen more of Oahu than if I were staying in a cushy hotel right in Waikiki. Staying in a home encourages you to explore – get out of the commercial area, and uproot yourself from the pool. It is so easy to just never leave a resort.

Here is what I found to be the pros:

1) You generally get a lot more for your money – Sometimes the cost of a large house for one week matches the cost of one night at a five star hotel.

Check out these amazing Hawaiian rentals below – in the upscale Kahala neighborhood …unfortunately, you have to go to the sites to see the properties – but they are spectacular!

http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p363815

http://www.vacationrentals.com/vacation-rentals/77872.html

You can get a house that sleeps 10 for $1300 a week – just 2 1/2 blocks from the beach, and 10 minutes form Waikiki.  If you have multiple children, and get a suite or two rooms, your nice hotel total could be $1300 a NIGHT. If you share a large house with relatives or another family, your bill comes down even farther.

2) The experience is much more immersing. Living like  a local… and like I said, getting out beyond the commercial and touristy areas with souvenir shops and fast food.

In the Kahala neighborhood of Oahu, there are gorgeous homes, and the beach right there.

Most likely you will have a car or will rent one so you can get around.

3) You can spread out at the house more… with more privacy.

4) Sometimes the houses come with luxurious perks: pool,

bikes,

surfboard, boogie boards, snorkeling gear,

a yard to yourself…

washing machines, and other things that you can’t get at a hotel.

5) It is cheaper on your food budget. Breakfast at home is easy with the kids… and way cheaper than eating in a hotel. Lunch too.

And it gives you more time to relax – you can sit and read a book during the time you would have spent waiting for your server to bring you your meal.

6) Finally, the last time I spoke with my house rental sources, they told me that the rental market is soft – lots of inventory even in places that typically rent out long before summer due to the economy. That means there are more opportunities for last minute rentals…. and finding a house in an area that is hard to usually find an availability. (Still waiting to confirm that is true and will update this.)

Here are some house rental sites:

In a place like Oahu, I would highly recommend it = there is so much to do on this island..having a home base is a nice thing to return to. Go for it. The world is your oyster.

Hotel of the Week: A New Rosewood off the Beaten Path

Last week I posted about hotels to watch in 2011 – and completely forgot about the Rosewood at San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. It is gorgeous – both the city and the hotel. San Miguel de Allende is maybe not on the first-timer to Mexico’s list of places to visit, but for those seeking out more culture in a picturesque town have for sure discovered it.

San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is in Central Mexico – not on the beach like other resort towns – but has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The charming cobblestone streets, and stunning Neo-classical-Baroque architecture attract many artists, and the town has been greatly preserved. The historic center is as charming as it gets. Just look at the views from the hotel!

San MIguel de Allende

The hotel helps offers various activities to help you enjoy what San Miguel de Allende has to offer…. For example:

Sightseeing tours: historic walking tours, home and garden tours, guided museum tours
Art, cooking, music and dance classes
Wine tastings, lectures and wellness workshops
Horseback riding, ATV adventures, mountain biking, hiking and golf
Bullfighting exhibitions
Day trips to nearby historic sites, thermal springs and traditional craft centers
Year-round festivals, art shows, musical and theatrical performances, and public events
Family friendly adventures

San Miguel de Allende offers visitors and residents a vibrant and lively community of artists, musicians and writers and a eclectic mix of Mexican folk traditions, fiestas and religious celebrations.

Shopping in San Miguel de Allende is a shop-a-holic’s dream – plenty of interesting Mexican handicrafts, boutiques, art galleries, and furniture and items for your home.

Thousands of people come to San Miguel de Allende every year to learn Spanish, study art, or take Mexican cooking classes.

Maybe you too? You could be enjoying this patio….The resort opens early February – the first availability is Feb. 8. www.rosewoodsanmiguel.com

Have a great weekend.

You should see the exciting new hotels opening in 2011…

Some seriously fabulous new hotels to check out – and there’s something for everyone. 2011 is looking good for travel.

Here is a sampling of a few new hotels:

1)  The Ritz Carlton, Hong Kong… slated to open March 2011, it’s claim to fame is that it will be the tallest hotel in the world (Occupying the top floors of the ICC building in Kowloon.). That IS a big deal, but if you have any idea of how majestic the views are in Hong Kong, then you will completely understand the, ahem, “heightened” importance.

Prepare yourself: Hong Kong is very Western… only in key pockets did I feel like I was really in China.

http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/HongKong/Default.htm

2) I am delirious over the recent collection of hotels that have opened in Sicily, Italy. Not kidding. Just visit the below websites. Some of the most beautiful settings, and classically elegant buildings….These would be my picks for dream destinations…. not the typical Italian tourist place (Rome, Florence…) but so much to offer.

—The Grand Hotel Timeo in Taormina :

Set right near the Greek Theatre…with spectacular views from the terrace. Bedroom balconies are nice, reminiscent of those at the Splendido in Portofino. Situated in the middle of the village, beaches are nearby.

The 72 room Grand Timeo dates from 1873 and features views of Mount Etna and the Bay of Naxos from panoramic terraces and guest rooms. Sorry these photos are so small – go to the website – it won’t disappoint! http://www.grandhoteltimeo.com/web/oght/grand_hotel_timeo.jsp

The other noteworthy hotel in Sicily, another Orient Express hotel, is the Villa Sant’ Andrea. Right on it’s own exclusive beach, it is breathtaking..and 5-star heaven. If you want to leave for some culture and village life, a cable car whisks you away.

Villa Sant'Andrea, Sicily, Italy

Visit this website too. The best photos couldn’t be downloaded. http://www.hotelvillasantandrea.com/web/ovsa/villa_sant_andrea_hotel.jsp

And lastly, and great excursion for families – a new Disney cruise…The third ship in the Disney fleet, the Disney Dream will take it’s maiden voyage Jan. 26. The ship holds 4000 passengers and sails to the Bahamas. As anyone who has ever done anything with Disney knows, it caters to children – and boasts to have the largest water coaster at sea! There is always plenty of entertainment for all on Disney cruises, and even if you don’t love being with large groups, I don’ t know many families who haven’t had a good time on a Disney cruise.

Winter When It Feels Like Summer Travel

While much of the Mid-West is blanketed in snow… the Minneapolis Metrodome caved in from the storm, we in Southern California are having a heatwave! It was an odd sight to say the least, when this weekend there were two cars stopped at a light – one with a surfboard on top, and another with a Christmas tree. Talk about backwards. It is 80 degrees.

On top of that, my garden is still producing roses – even more buds coming! Normally at this time, my roses would be dormant, and I would be cutting my orchids…It is all quite harmonious because I have roses May-Nov, and orchids Nov-May…so my vases are always full. But the wacky weather we have had all year is disrupting our circadian rhythms.

I was thinking about this when it dawned on me that I have some backwards tendencies myself. I have been known to crave  a beach vacation this time of year (haven’t we all?)… and welcome a disruption to my life’s normal weather pattern. One place I have escaped to during a dreary winter is Australia, and boy was it hard to come home to foggy, cold San Francisco afterward. Down under it is just about summer right now mate. I visited the usual Sydney…but made an extra trek to the Great Barrier Reef resorts of Hamilton and Hayman Islands. Hamilton is for families… Hayman, leave the kids at home.

Heron Island Resort, Australia

But I’ve always wanted to visit Heron Island, another island resort in the Great Barrier Reef. In fact, this may be the only island you can really mean it is IN the Great Barrier Reef because you can wade out to the reef from the shores of the resort. THAT makes for some easy marine tours.

Heron Island Resort on Great Barrier Reef

Heron is one of the few upscale GB reefs that caters to families. There is a junior ranger program, with heavy emphasis on the environment, and was developed by marine biologists and naturalists.  The Junior Rangers Program offers a range of nature based activities designed to nurture a sense of exploration and caring for the environment, from reef walks, bird-watching and beach combing through to tree planting and even the opportunity to design and run your own resort island. The young explorers earn badges through each activity.

The island is surrounded by bountiful wildlife, which makes it a perfect location for a resort research station…The crystal clear waters of the reef surrounding the Research Station are home to around 60% of the 1500 species of fish and around 72% of the coral species found in the Great Barrier Reef. One of my favorite things is that there are two types of turtles that nest on the island, and if you time it right, you can observe.

Of course, all of the enrichment and fun takes place against the backdrop of drop dead beautiful beaches. There are snorkeling and diving opportunities at the resort… or you can choose to kayak out in the waters and picnic on a deserted beach.

If you feel like you’ve “been there, done that,” when you look at travel brochures, this might be the perfect antidote. Especially if you are buried in the Mid-West. I feel for ya. G’day!

Hotel of the Week With Some Holiday Spirit.. and Deals.

Beverly HIlls Hotel

The iconic pink hotel in Los Angeles gets pretty red and green during the holidays. I’m talking of course about the Beverly Hills hotel which is beautifully decorated for Christmas.

Since Beverly Hills is an international destination – especially for shopping I might add, the Beverly Hills Hotel is a nice respite from any holiday purchasing that might take place on Rodeo Dr. (There are more affordable streets in the Beverly Hills flats!) The last time I did a story about Beverly Hills for the Travel Channel, the high end designer stores were filled with more international customers than locals…so if visitors need a place to stay, the hotel is also offering a winter special – stay two nights and get the third free..along with two complimentary cocktails in the Polo Lounge. The hotel is a five-star hotel, so it is still expensive, but cheaper than normal with these specials.

Polo Lounge, Beverly HIlls Hotel

Speaking of the Polo Lounge – a great night time haunt, but also that is where I’d have lunch in between Christmas shopping… I actually had  lunch there recently for a friend’s birthday. There is a lovely patio, with no cost spared on poinsettias to add some holiday spirit. Fun people watching too – I’ve seen both George Michael and Rod Stewart there. The menu is varied… the Kobe burger and pear salad were both delicious. There is an indoor area too in case the Southern California weather doesn’t cooperate. The good news is you don’ t have to stay here to eat like you are :) www.beverlyhillshotel.com

To help you get in the spirit, the city of Beverly Hills hosts a number of fun holiday activities…from Christmas Carolers strolling the streets… to kids’ photo opps with Mr and Mrs. Claus… to a toy workshop. For more holiday fun that may interest you go to http://www.beverlyhillsbehere.com/cvbgeneral.asp?id=618May

Here’s to the holiday spirit…Beverly Hills style!

Travel Tip Tuesday: Cash Crunched? Try a Cruise…

October is National Cruise Vacation Month. I know I know – it’s a month on the calendar set by the cruise industry to entice you to book a cruise.

BUT  - there really are some good deals  coming on cruising.org tomorrow, Oct. 13! For example…save $1000 on an Oceania luxury cruise… and AMAWaterways is offering a “2 for 1″ savings of up to $2000 per stateroom.

AMA Waterways

If you think  you need more than good prices to get you to take a cruise, let me tell you these ships aren’t all about the midnight buffet anymore. There is a cruise for anyone – if you want to cruise down a European river with 100 other people, book it. Or take a soft adventure cruise in the Antarctica or down the Amazon, check it out.

Good for kids: I really want to take my kids through Alaska’s Inside Passage on a small ship with biologists on board to make learning about the environment fun..and take in the stunning scenery. Lindblad Expeditions is affiliated with Natl Geographic tours so there are trusted naturalists on board.

Here is one of the newest cruise ships that has gone “overboard” in it’s epic perks:

A 31,000 foot spa…

20 restaurants onboard…and even an ice bar, where everything is made of ice.

A huge pool with waterslides

60 villa suites with access to a private pool and nightclub

Blue Man Group and Second City performers are the entertainment.

The Norwegian Epic has the capacity for 4,100 passengers, so lots of people better be your thing.

On another note, there is even a cruise for COUGARS… not the feline type, but the ones who can take their younger boyfriends. That pretty much says it all about the variety these days – of cruises that is :)

I have been on two cruises, and here’s what works:

1) You don’ t have to make as many decisions. One phone call and you are booked – say good bye to booking hotel rooms in various destinations, and finding flights or car rentals to get from place to place.

2) Unpack once.

3) Many ships have a diverse group of restaurants on board so you don’ thave to sit in one big dining room anymore – although it is a good way to meet other shipmates.

4) Affordable – there is a cruise for every price point, and it is all inclusive – meals, activities, accommodations are all paid for.

5) Great for multi-generational travel or family reunions. It is hard to not find something for everyone.

TIPS:

Finding the cruise for you can be overwhelming. Go to cruising.org and type in what kind of amenities you want, and where you’d like to go and the different cruise lines that match your desires will pop up so it weeds out cruises that don’ t interest you. There you will also find CLIA certified travel agents who specialize in cruises.

Follow your favorite cruise line and airlines on social media, or sign up for their email alerts to be on top of all the potential deals.

Don’t miss the boat – tomorrow Oct 13 is World’s Largest Cruise Night when all the deals are offered on cruising.org

  Trip crush:

New term referring to the trip you admire from afar….especially pertinent when involving viniculture at harvest time.

Me at the Langtry Estate at Guenoc Winery..years ago!

Today is the day  that most vineyards in Northern California’s wine country will begin harvesting their grapes. Yes, some vineyard managers have started a little earlier, but as a whole, most in the wine industry will start now.

Traditionally the blessing of the grapes comes Labor Day. But this year, there’s a late harvest due to a cool summer, with little heat to produce sugar and ripen the grapes. The season will be compressed because they need to start picking the grapes before rain hits and ruins the crop.

So what does that mean for travelers to Napa or Sonoma? According to Price Family Vineyards General Manager Steve Hill there are about 5 more weeks of activity…harvesting the grapes and the crush – always a fun and beautiful time to visit the wine country. So, I will be spending this week talking about wine vacations….

Hotel of the Week: Your Own Private Island in Belize

I admit it. Many of the places I have been with my job are NOT for the budget traveler. But that doesn’t mean we all can’t dream a little, right?

Cayo Espanto…a private island resort on Ambergris Caye in Belize,  is one of those dream-worthy places. This little island is home to seven small villas..one of them an over water bungalow…all secluded from each other.

My Bungalow at Cayo Espanto

You feel like you have the island to yourself – or you really can: rent the whole island for 18 of your BFFS  - for $18,000 a night.

When I was there I never saw another guest except once when I was kayaking around the island. It is a quiet, beautiful place located on the seriously clear blue waters of the world’s second largest barrier reef. Our villa had it’s own private outdoor dipping pool.

There is plenty to do there….fishing…

Snorkeling..and scuba diving. The rays come right up to you!

There is a nice spa at Cayo – the treatments come to you. I had a relaxing outdoor massage with a tropical mud that was supposed to cleanse my skin.

We also took a short boat ride to a completely desolate island, where the staff made us a picnic lunch…including the best ceviche with freshly caught fish.

That’s only if you want complete/guaranteed privacy…. You truly do feel like you are the only ones at Cayo Espanto – which actually was a little hard to get used to . The staff was very discrete and left you alone, and we didn’t eat in a big dining room with other guests – the chef actually prepared a meal on our dock.

Belize is located on the Yucatan Peninsula…and has Mayan ruins nearby – if you can drag yourself away from paradise. It is a relatively poor country, and you see that making your way to Cayo Espanto…which may make it harder to shell out the $1000 and more a night that this relaxing retreat charges guests. The price does include meals and drinks…..On your radar? Airfare from most major east and west coast cities is around $500 round trip. Keep the kids at home this trip…

www.aprivateisland.com

Have a great weekend!
