Hotel of the Week: Perfect Post-Spring Break Get-Away

Palm Springs has been a spring break destination for decades… sun-seekers from all over the country come to the Southern California resort town for some beautiful weather, golf, and swimming pools galore.

So if you can, come after or before spring break when the crowds have left, and before the weather becomes unbearably hot. But here’s a tip: If you can stand the heat, desert hotels offer great specials in summer!!

At La Qunta Resort, CA

I was recently at one of my favorite resorts – La Quinta Resort and Club in the desert town of La Quinta. It is not an overdone hotel. The white Spanish style buildings have a casual vibe which I love, and the place is fantastic for kids. It is nicely spread out on many acres. www.laquintaresort.com

La Quinta Resort and Club

I was there at the beginning of spring break season, so the place was buzzing… fun and lively, but harder to book a tennis court or spa treatment… and definitely harder to get an outside table at one of the great restaurants there. (If you like loud music, the upstairs patio near the Mexican restaurant Adobe Grill is in full party mode… if that’s not your thing, and you’d rather be able to talk to your companions, try Morgan’s in the Desert, closer to the valet parking.)

When we come, the kids play tennis, golf, swim, or venture into the air conditioned arcade when it gets really hot. There ARE 41 pools here after all… I know what you’re thinking, but it really isn’t a zoo. The way the resort is laid out, there are a few hotel rooms to each pool. You can book anything from a casita – some which have their own patios and fireplaces – or a ville or a suite.

Easter weekend is especially great for kids – starting Good Friday (April 22) the fun begins – dive in movie and pottery painting for the kids… & on Easter Sunday an Easter egg hunt.

N. Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs CA

If you are looking for some adult time outside the resort, go to downtown Palm Springs. One of my favorite thing is to hunt for Mid-Century Modern treasures… whether you find some furniture at an estate sale, and refinish it… or find that gem in one of the many mod stores. Head to N Palm Canyon Drive for tons of furniture galleries… you really only park once and walk the strip.

Christopher Anthony in Palm Springs

One boutique with incredible stuff in my opinion is Christopher Anthony. My friend bought a feminine desk that once belonged to Eva Gabor, and me, being a sucker for art, I ended up falling for and buying this contemporary painting.

Try to negotiate the price of things…  many places also give designer discounts.

To cap off the adult afternoon, try head to The Parker Hotel – a hip place that used to be the old Gene Autry Hotel.

The Parker Hotel

It is swank, and I just had to go to see the design alone. Part old Hollywood glamor, yet with a new fresh eclectic mix. Lunch at Norma’s in the hotel isn’t really worth the trip – get a smoothie, or a drink at the fabulous bar instead.

How chic, right?  www.theparkerpalmsprings.com

Wherever your travels take you, I wish you a good one :)

Hotel of the Week: A New Rosewood off the Beaten Path

Last week I posted about hotels to watch in 2011 – and completely forgot about the Rosewood at San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. It is gorgeous – both the city and the hotel. San Miguel de Allende is maybe not on the first-timer to Mexico’s list of places to visit, but for those seeking out more culture in a picturesque town have for sure discovered it.

San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is in Central Mexico – not on the beach like other resort towns – but has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The charming cobblestone streets, and stunning Neo-classical-Baroque architecture attract many artists, and the town has been greatly preserved. The historic center is as charming as it gets. Just look at the views from the hotel!

San MIguel de Allende

The hotel helps offers various activities to help you enjoy what San Miguel de Allende has to offer…. For example:

Sightseeing tours: historic walking tours, home and garden tours, guided museum tours
Art, cooking, music and dance classes
Wine tastings, lectures and wellness workshops
Horseback riding, ATV adventures, mountain biking, hiking and golf
Bullfighting exhibitions
Day trips to nearby historic sites, thermal springs and traditional craft centers
Year-round festivals, art shows, musical and theatrical performances, and public events
Family friendly adventures

San Miguel de Allende offers visitors and residents a vibrant and lively community of artists, musicians and writers and a eclectic mix of Mexican folk traditions, fiestas and religious celebrations.

Shopping in San Miguel de Allende is a shop-a-holic’s dream – plenty of interesting Mexican handicrafts, boutiques, art galleries, and furniture and items for your home.

Thousands of people come to San Miguel de Allende every year to learn Spanish, study art, or take Mexican cooking classes.

Maybe you too? You could be enjoying this patio….The resort opens early February – the first availability is Feb. 8. www.rosewoodsanmiguel.com

Have a great weekend.

You should see the exciting new hotels opening in 2011…

Some seriously fabulous new hotels to check out – and there’s something for everyone. 2011 is looking good for travel.

Here is a sampling of a few new hotels:

1)  The Ritz Carlton, Hong Kong… slated to open March 2011, it’s claim to fame is that it will be the tallest hotel in the world (Occupying the top floors of the ICC building in Kowloon.). That IS a big deal, but if you have any idea of how majestic the views are in Hong Kong, then you will completely understand the, ahem, “heightened” importance.

Prepare yourself: Hong Kong is very Western… only in key pockets did I feel like I was really in China.

http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/HongKong/Default.htm

2) I am delirious over the recent collection of hotels that have opened in Sicily, Italy. Not kidding. Just visit the below websites. Some of the most beautiful settings, and classically elegant buildings….These would be my picks for dream destinations…. not the typical Italian tourist place (Rome, Florence…) but so much to offer.

—The Grand Hotel Timeo in Taormina :

Set right near the Greek Theatre…with spectacular views from the terrace. Bedroom balconies are nice, reminiscent of those at the Splendido in Portofino. Situated in the middle of the village, beaches are nearby.

The 72 room Grand Timeo dates from 1873 and features views of Mount Etna and the Bay of Naxos from panoramic terraces and guest rooms. Sorry these photos are so small – go to the website – it won’t disappoint! http://www.grandhoteltimeo.com/web/oght/grand_hotel_timeo.jsp

The other noteworthy hotel in Sicily, another Orient Express hotel, is the Villa Sant’ Andrea. Right on it’s own exclusive beach, it is breathtaking..and 5-star heaven. If you want to leave for some culture and village life, a cable car whisks you away.

Villa Sant'Andrea, Sicily, Italy

Visit this website too. The best photos couldn’t be downloaded. http://www.hotelvillasantandrea.com/web/ovsa/villa_sant_andrea_hotel.jsp

And lastly, and great excursion for families – a new Disney cruise…The third ship in the Disney fleet, the Disney Dream will take it’s maiden voyage Jan. 26. The ship holds 4000 passengers and sails to the Bahamas. As anyone who has ever done anything with Disney knows, it caters to children – and boasts to have the largest water coaster at sea! There is always plenty of entertainment for all on Disney cruises, and even if you don’t love being with large groups, I don’ t know many families who haven’t had a good time on a Disney cruise.

My bags are ready to be packed!

Hotel of the Week With Some Holiday Spirit.. and Deals.

Beverly HIlls Hotel

The iconic pink hotel in Los Angeles gets pretty red and green during the holidays. I’m talking of course about the Beverly Hills hotel which is beautifully decorated for Christmas.

Since Beverly Hills is an international destination – especially for shopping I might add, the Beverly Hills Hotel is a nice respite from any holiday purchasing that might take place on Rodeo Dr. (There are more affordable streets in the Beverly Hills flats!) The last time I did a story about Beverly Hills for the Travel Channel, the high end designer stores were filled with more international customers than locals…so if visitors need a place to stay, the hotel is also offering a winter special – stay two nights and get the third free..along with two complimentary cocktails in the Polo Lounge. The hotel is a five-star hotel, so it is still expensive, but cheaper than normal with these specials.

Polo Lounge, Beverly HIlls Hotel

Speaking of the Polo Lounge – a great night time haunt, but also that is where I’d have lunch in between Christmas shopping… I actually had  lunch there recently for a friend’s birthday. There is a lovely patio, with no cost spared on poinsettias to add some holiday spirit. Fun people watching too – I’ve seen both George Michael and Rod Stewart there. The menu is varied… the Kobe burger and pear salad were both delicious. There is an indoor area too in case the Southern California weather doesn’t cooperate. The good news is you don’ t have to stay here to eat like you are :) www.beverlyhillshotel.com

To help you get in the spirit, the city of Beverly Hills hosts a number of fun holiday activities…from Christmas Carolers strolling the streets… to kids’ photo opps with Mr and Mrs. Claus… to a toy workshop. For more holiday fun that may interest you go to http://www.beverlyhillsbehere.com/cvbgeneral.asp?id=618May

Here’s to the holiday spirit…Beverly Hills style!

Hotel of the Week: The Mystery

All right – I’m gonna spice things up a bit. I’m an Aries – I get bored very easily…

So today I am going to post photos of a hotel, and see if anyone can  guess which hotel it is. Prize goes to winner.

The design grabbed me – modern, without being cold – aesthetically my favorite. It is a five star hotel.

But – what makes it unique is that despite the sophistication and outstanding service, it is one of the best hotels for families with children.

Some of the design could be higher end..(mostly in the rooms) but for the clientele to which this hotel caters, it is plenty nice. Some rooms have washers and dryers inside… a nice perk.

Good luck.

Have a wonderful weekend!

In Honor of the 33 Rescued Miners in Chile…

…Photographs of Chile’s extraordinary landscape from a trip to that country. The story is riveting and has held the world’s attention in the past two days..and possibly digging up some curiosity as to what this country is like.

These are from a trip to Explora in Patagonia, Chile… but there is another Explora resort in the Atacama desert, where the miners were working.

Hotel of the Week: Is the Queen Mary Haunted?

Well, we know for the month of October it is. This is when one of Southern California’s most elaborate Halloween celebrations takes place on board the legendary ocean-liner the Queen Mary. The very spooky celebration in Long Beach includes hundreds of scary creatures, three on-board mazes, and two onshore mazes, plus food, drink and other entertainment. They really go “overboard” with scary.

What makes this month long event a little spookier than your average haunted house, is that the Queen Mary has been the subject of paranormal investigations for years!

Experts and guests claim to have heard splashing in the old pool, and to have seen bathers in period swimsuits walking around the pool deck. Other freaky claims: hearing screams, and seeing silverware move in the dining room.

The ship has a rich history, so it is no wonder these stories circulate. It’s maiden voyage was in 1936, and the ship was a symbol of luxury and high class at the time. Between 1940 and 1946 it was used in World War II to transport wounded soldiers and even Winston Churchill among other things.

I stayed overnight in the Queen Mary hotel this week for a shoot. I gotta be honest – it kinda gave me the creeps. It was intriguing and scary at the same time. Perhaps it was because the ship is historically maintained- it looks as if nothing has changed since it was built. (Which, honestly, the hotel seems a little tired. It could use a re-do, and I think it would attract even more visitors!)

But – I had my own bizarre encounter. I had to wake up at 2:10 AM one morning to get ready for some live broadcasts on the East Coast that began at 3:30 AM. I set my alarm clock and went to sleep early. All night I did hear sounds, but it was the last thing I heard right before I woke up that was strange – someone was whispering in my ear ..”the windows…. the windows..” (Although someone needs to tell the would-be ghost that they are called portholes on board :) )

The voice was so real I woke up, and looked at the clock. It was two minutes before I was supposed to wake up at 2AM. That right there strikes me as strange because I usually don’t just wake up for no reason at 2AM!

I don’ t blame you if you never read my blog again. I sound crazy. But is it a coincidence something like this happened on a so-called haunted ship? I did a little research…although I was in room A036, room A025 has been the subject of haunted reports numerous times.

I will never know. But we all can learn more about the paranormal activity by taking some of the behind the scenes tours on the Queen Mary.

There is a Haunted Encounters Tour… and World War II Tour..and a historical tour. Don’t miss the boat – Go to www.queenmary.com for a historic and haunted Halloween.

Hotel of the Week: Hip in Healdsburg, Wine Country

Last post in a week long look at wine travel in light of CA harvest season

When I lived in the Bay Area 10 years ago, I always thought there were never enough hotels in nearby wine country…the usual players, yes – Auberge du Soleil, Meadowood, SIlverado, and of course many B&Bs that weren’t always my style.

Now I am happy to say, there are many more options for every type of traveler.

h2 which just opened in Healdsburg this summer, is a good option for a less expensive alternative. It is geared toward a younger traveler in my opinion – more style over luxurious substance.

But that style goes far – it is a funky blend of eco-friendly touches – bamboo floors, LEED certified building, organic linens – and hip design.

The things I like:

Every room or suite comes with a balcony or patio…

Free WiFI (that will always get on my good side.)…

Free three hour bike rentals to tool around town…

Prices for rooms start at $210 a night.

And how’s this for nutty? In the winter the hotel will open a hand fan museum, displaying more than 500 fans from around the world. A little culture beyond the yeast in your wine.

Healsdburg is a charming town, home to a number of well-regarded wineries like Ferrari-Carano, Jordan, and Rodney Strong.

On the city’s website, Healdsburg  is described as a place with “an eclectic offering of the finest things in life…” h2, with it’s break out style, should be a good fit.

Have a great weekend…and hopefully I’ve inspired you to uncork your passion – travel or wine.

Hotel of the Week: This one is Key for Families or Couples..

Cheeca Lodge, Islamorada, Florida Keys

In the Florida Keys, that is. We had a well-rounded itinerary for our family vacation this past summer. There was something for everyone. Started in the Florida Keys…. drove an hour and  a half to Miami to stay the night and break up the longer trip to our final destination: Disneyworld in Orlando.

But I want to talk about our first stop: The Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada, Florida Keys. I had always wanted to go, and the timing was great – they had just spent $30 million on a remodel..and were offering a “stay two nights and get one free” special. That’s because we went in August -  a good time to look for specials in Florida since it is hurricane season. But I have always been a gambler. If you’d like to to go then too, look into travel insurance and get a policy that covers a weather evacuation or disaster.

Beach at Cheeca Lodge

Cheeca Lodge is a special place -although you wouldn’t know by looking at the architecture. I was underwhelmed when we drove up, but the place quickly grew on me. It has a laid back atmosphere, with tropical days and nights, gorgeous cloud-filled skies and sunsets, turquoise blue bath-water beaches, and plenty of fun activities. The weather was a little humid, but not bad. President George H.W. Bush has been coming here for fishing trips for years.

Pool at Cheeca Lodge

I think the best part for families is that the swimming pool is huge, but only gets 4′6″ deep… which meant I put a life vest on my youngest, and could actually semi-relax by the pool,  read my book – looking up every now and then to make sure everything was OK.

KEY for parents who know that a family vacation is not always a vacation.

The pool was nice in between all activities – fishing on the 525 foot long pier that Cheeca is known for was a hit with the kids. The resort provides fishing rods, and you can buy bait for $8 that will last you an afternoon.

Looking back from the pier gives you a good glimpse of the various areas of the lodge.

Hotel “Rooms” That Mesmerize Me…Shelter Under the Stars

Just finished reading the August issue of Conde Nast Traveler magazine… and the cover story is fantastic: “Sleeping with the Stars.”

The article profiles resorts that offer open air, star gazing sleeping arrangements (Can’t really call them rooms can I?). It touches primal instincts here, but with a touch of luxury.

I have to share some of the photos to inspire – and by the way, coincidentally  the lucky photographer who got to visit each destination is a friend of mine’s brother – the very talented Stephen Wilkes. I have been to one of his shows where he was exhibiting his photos of China….provocative and beautiful.

This shelter under the stars is at one of my top three favorite hotels EVER. ..Las Ventanas al Paraiso, in Los Cabos, Mexico …

On the terrace of the penthouse, one has a 180 degree view of the Sea of Cortes…and the sensual amenity of a nice ocean breeze.  An extra bonus: All suites have telescopes and guides to the constellations. www.lasventanas.com

Next up:

A treehouse at the Lion Sands Private Game Reserve in South Africe…definitely for a “gamer.” One will probably hear the roars of nearby lions as he or she drifts off to sleep… but then wake to the birds’ song.

Guests can have dinner and drinks Swiss family Robinson Style before dozing off…It is just you, a bed, hot water bottle, a wash basin, torches, lanterns, and a two way radio under the dark night sky. Talk about a unique honeymoon…www.lionsands.com

Next up:

The relatively new Amangiri Resort in Canyon Point, Utah..and it takes advantage of being one of the best places in the United States to stargaze by setting up camp in the middle of the 600 acre resort. Crazy, right to sleep out in the wild..waking to animals nearby? If you’ve ever been to an Aman resort, you know that anything is possible…

www.amanresorts.com

Next up:

L’Albereta, Erbusco, Lombardy, Italy…Located in a Relais and Chateaux hotel near the adorable town of Bergamo is the Cabriolet Suite. You can surprise your traveling partner after getting in bed by pressing a button that opens up the roof to the night sky. Heavenly – literally…

This suite is supposedly sought after – Legend has it that for every falling star, a wish will be granted. Easy to believe anything staying in THAT room….www.albereta.it/en
